Clayfield (M) Residence

This formerly Hong Kong based family decided to renovate their Brisbane rental property and return to Queensland after 12 years abroad. They returned intermittently to provide feedback during the design and construction phases, but chose not to move back until after handover. Subsequently, the project team were given a high level of responsibility to oversee the process from sketch design onwards.

The existing old Queenslander was raised and extended. The Living spaces were run through the centre of the house with wings on either side for the Master and Children’s Suites.

An understated classic white and black palette complemented by timber floors and timber framed windows, skylights and doors was developed as a backdrop for their gallery of colourful Aboriginal and Asian art and artefacts. Subtly located mirrors were incorporated to increase the scale of the space where needed. In contrast, the separateness of the bedroom Suites gave the opportunity to dress these rooms in the whimsy of wallpaper and colour.
